The Nutrition Dex is an independent editorial publication covering measurement accuracy in nutrition and dietary assessment. The beat is narrow and deliberately so: where the calorie number on a sandwich sleeve or inside a tracking app comes from, how it's measured, how wrong it is, and how we know.

Why this publication exists

Most nutrition writing treats a calorie figure as settled — as though there exists, somewhere, a definitive ledger to be consulted. There doesn't. A calorie figure is an estimate produced by a specific method (Atwater factors applied to a specific USDA FoodData Central release, or bomb calorimetry on a specific batch, or a photo-logging model validated against a specific reference meal set), carried through a specific rounding rule (21 CFR 101.9), and subject to a specific regulatory tolerance (FDA's 20% rule for naturally-occurring nutrients). Each step introduces error. That error is measurable, and a serious publication reports it.

The Nutrition Dex was founded on 18 November 2025 to cover that chain in the dry, numerate register of a good broadsheet science desk — and nothing else. We don't publish recipes. We don't run before-and-after photos. We don't accept advertising.

Editorial independence

No sponsored entries. No paid placement. No affiliate links. When a consumer product is named in the course of an entry, it is named alongside at least two competitors, with an accuracy figure (MAE or MAPE against a specified reference meal set) attached to each. The publication's relationship with any named vendor, if any, is disclosed in plain English at the bottom of the page. We don't write reviews; we define terms.

James Oliver is a 41-year-old journalist-turned-publisher who launched The Nutrition Dex on 18 November 2025 after growing progressively irritated with the casual innumeracy of most nutrition writing. He spent the first decade of his career on a regional daily paper, covering agriculture, food policy, and — eventually — the peculiar economics of how a sandwich ends up with a calorie number printed on its sleeve. The beat taught him that the number is almost never wrong in the way people assume, and almost always wrong in ways nobody bothers to explain.

The Nutrition Dex is his attempt to close that gap. Every entry is written or edited by James himself, in the house voice of a morning broadsheet: dry, precise, allergic to hype. Entries cite the USDA FoodData Central release they draw from (SR Legacy, Foundation Foods, FNDDS, or Branded Foods), the FDA regulation in play, the journal paper that supplies the methodology, and the specific statistical measure — MAE, MAPE, RMSE — used to describe accuracy. Where a consumer product is named, it is named alongside at least two competitors and always with a number attached.

James lives in a small flat with a 0.1-gram jeweller's scale, a 2-gram kitchen scale, and strong opinions about which one to use for olive oil. He reads every correction email.

The Nutrition Dex is not a medical service, a dietary-advice column, or a product-review site. The content is educational reference material.
